In collaboration with Tender Creative, LED designed the first ever free-standing store for Converse. The design for this small (1200 sf) prototype boutique reflects two key aspects of the Converse brand and its iconic canvas sneakers: their origins as the original basketball shoe, and their subsequent appropriation by generations of countercultures. Much of the store is treated as a canvas for local artists to periodically take over and transform. While the sales and merchandising infrastructure remain in place and functional, the architectural details are designed as armatures for sculptural installations or other acts of alteration. LED's self-imposed challenge was to find the balance between a permanent, physical identity, and extreme reconfigurability.
